Playing music is a lifelong learning process. Over the years I have had the opportunity to share what I have learned with hundreds of students. Nothing is more satisfying than being able to pass along what my teachers and experiences have taught me, from concrete matters of technique and music theory to more abstract philosophical approaches to music making. I welcome enthusiastic students of all levels. My strength is in jazz and general musicianship. I learned guitar by playing the music I loved and at the same time learning the musical tools that would allow me to grow as a musician; this is the approach I continue to favor as a teacher. Whatever style you are playing, knowing what notes you are playing and understanding how they work together harmonically and rhythmically only adds to the enjoyment and your ability to play better.
Don’t just take it from me! Here is what some former students have to say:
“Ken Husbands is a great guitar teacher. He is an accomplished musician with knowledge, experience, skill, and an infectious love of many musical styles. As a teacher, he listens to the needs of the student and tailors lessons to fill those needs, identifying strengths and weaknesses, assigning exercises, and setting goals for future lessons. I highly recommend him to anyone seeking to improve their playing."
“Ken is a wonderful guitar teacher and has had a big effect on my playing since I started studying with him two years ago. Whatever subject we cover he makes sure that I master it before moving on to the next one. Ken is always showing me new ways to look at music and gives me ideas that I would never have come up with by myself. I would recommend Ken to any aspiring guitarist, beginner to advanced."
I have a BA in music and have studied privately with Berklee School of Music faculty. My music teaching is also informed by several years of teaching humanities and foreign language at the university level when completing my PhD. In addition to teaching private guitar students, I am a Co-Director at the Berkeley Jazz Workshop, where I coach beginning through advanced ensembles of 5-8 players and I also teach beginning guitar at Musically Minded Academy.
